Ultimate Insulation Supplies recently played a crucial role in a Passivhaus project taking place in Tarbert, Argyll. The primary goal of this project was to create a housing development that meets the rigorous standards of Passivhaus construction. Key factors considered were ensuring exceptional energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability.
Project Overview
Passivhaus is a standard for energy-efficient buildings that focuses on reducing the building's energy consumption. The design and construction must be airtight, highly insulated, and energy-efficient to minimise the need for heating and cooling. This project in Tarbert aimed to build homes that would provide excellent thermal comfort throughout all seasons and significantly lower energy consumption, aligning with the push toward more sustainable living and providing future proofing against ever-increasing energy costs.
Our Contribution
For this project, Ultimate Insulation Supplies provided a range of natural fibre insulation products, tapes and membranes:
Steico: Woodfibre natural insulation, Steico products were selected for their sustainability and performance - being able to deliver a natural product which had low Thermal conductivity (as low as 0.036 w/m2k).
Inditherm: Produced by Indinature this Scottish-manufactured, hemp-based insulation material was chosen for its strong acoustic and thermal performance balanced with a cost-effective price per sqm.
Siga Weather Tightness and Siga Airtightness Systems: To meet the airtightness and weatherproofing requirements of Passivhaus, we supplied Siga's industry-leading products. These systems are crucial for controlling moisture, reducing air leakage leaks and ensuring the building envelope is completely sealed, which is essential for maintaining the energy efficiency and comfort of the homes.
Results
Using these products ensured that the Tarbert Passivhaus project met its energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability goals. The homes are now well-insulated, with excellent airtightness and weather tightness, contributing to lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint for the residents.
